Band Parents and Students:

Welcome to one of the most exciting experiences in which you can be a part – THE BAND! Now, more than ever, we have information to justify why we do this demanding, yet rewarding, activity. Experts have concluded that the study of music helps with spatial reasoning, test taking, and overall quality of life! Factor in social skills, emotional development, leadership training, group interaction, aesthetic perception, music making, the discipline of being in a band program and I can see why so many students want to be part of the band program at Jackson High School! The ultimate goal is a lifelong understanding and appreciation for quality music and music making!

To make any organization successful, much planning and effort are required. This handbook was written for the members of the Jackson High School Band, Color Guard, and parents. Knowledge of its contents will provide each student with an understanding of how he/she may best contribute to the productivity and overall success of the program. Some of the items within this document have already passed for this year and are more for your information in preparation for next school year.

We can only be successful if every student has at least one parent volunteering in some capacity of the band program. Students need to know that we think what they do is IMPORTANT! You will quickly find that band is truly a FAMILY in and of itself. We have a lot of pride in being the biggest family in Butts County!

I strongly encourage that at least one parent of each child in the band contact a booster club board member or myself to find a place where you can help this year! Please read all of the information and both student and parent should sign the letter of mutual consent in the back of the book. Failure to sign the form and return by August 21st assumes acknowledgement of the handbook and all of its contents.

My suggestion is to read this handbook over and ask questions. For new members, this is the book that keeps us running smoothly and efficiently. Most questions can be answered by consulting this handbook and policies will be adjusted from year to year as the need arises to clarify issues within the program. Copies of forms to turn in can be found in the appendix section.

I am looking forward to a year full of success and high achievements!!

Musically yours,

Stan M. Koterba
Director of Bands
